Sequence of photographs showing growth of British Smooth Newt egg to embryo and larva, May 2008

The Smooth Newt's egg starts spherical, the embryo then elongates into a horseshoe shape as the features of the larva develop. The top four and bottom right images are representative of what can be seen with the naked eye, albeit larger than life size. A magnifying lens is needed to see the detail revealed in the larger pictures. All photos taken during May 2008.
